Silicone Rubber Medical Device Accessories - Silicone Rectal Catheter
The silicone rectal catheter is an interventional medical consumable made of medical-grade silicone rubber, exclusively designed for clinical diagnosis, treatment and nursing operations on the rectal area. It is a core silicone medical accessory for gastroenterology, proctology, geriatrics and home care. Leveraging silicone’s biocompatibility, softness and disinfection resistance, it adapts to a variety of clinical needs such as rectal drug administration, enema, defecation care and intestinal decompression, and its structure and specifications can be customized according to diagnosis and treatment scenarios. Core Material Properties (Medical-grade Silicone Rubber) The core of the catheter is made of silicone rubber complying with medical standards including ISO 9001, USP Class VI and FDA. It is latex-free, plasticizer-free and free of harmful substance leaching, adapting to the internal environment of the human intestinal tract. Its core properties are as follows:
Excellent biocompatibility: No irritation or allergy upon contact with the rectal mucosa, no redness or inflammation, and reduced risk of mucosal damage even for long-term indwelling, meeting the safety requirements of interventional medical consumables.
Soft & highly elastic, conforming to the intestinal tract: The silicone rubber features a soft and highly elastic texture with a smooth, burr-free catheter surface, resulting in low insertion resistance. It conforms to the physiological curvature of the rectum, greatly relieving patient discomfort, and is suitable for special groups such as children, the elderly and post-operative patients.
Resistant to repeated disinfection, reusable: Withstands various medical disinfection methods including high-temperature autoclaving (121℃), alcohol wiping, iodophor disinfection and ethylene oxide sterilization without deformation, aging or cracking. Some specifications are reusable, reducing clinical usage costs.
Acid and alkali resistance, adapted to the intestinal environment: Resists erosion from the weakly alkaline intestinal environment and commonly used clinical medicinal liquids and enema solutions (e.g., normal saline, glycerin enema, traditional Chinese medicine enema), with stable material properties without swelling or degradation.
Good airtightness and temperature resistance: The catheter wall has excellent sealing performance, with no liquid leakage or seepage during drug administration/enema. The operating temperature is compatible with human body temperature (36~37℃), and it can also withstand low-temperature storage (-20℃) and high-temperature disinfection with no performance attenuation.
Customizable radiopaque line: Some custom clinical versions can be added with medical radiopaque lines (barium/tungsten lines), which clearly display the catheter’s insertion depth and position under X-ray, improving the accuracy and safety of operations. Core Structure and Conventional Specifications The silicone rectal catheter is integrally molded/extruded, with a structural design tailored to clinical operation needs. It has no splices or dead corners and is easy to clean. Its conventional structure and specifications are as follows: Basic Structure
Catheter body: Hollow silicone tube with a uniform wall thickness (0.3~1.0mm), ensuring toughness while maintaining softness to prevent poor liquid flow caused by compressive deformation.
Connector: One end is equipped with a Luer connector/barb connector, which can be precisely connected to diagnostic and therapeutic instruments such as syringes, enema bags and infusion sets with leak-free sealing.
Tip: Blunt closed design (blind end) with 2~4 side liquid outlet/drug administration holes, preventing direct mucosal irritation from the tip. Medicinal/enema liquid flows out evenly from the side holes to improve absorption/cleaning effects.
Scale marking: Clear centimeter scale marks (5cm, 10cm, 15cm) printed on the catheter body, facilitating medical staff to control insertion depth and avoid intestinal damage caused by improper operation. Conventional Specifications
Catheter diameter: Classified by clinical applicable population: pediatric version Φ3~5mm, adult standard version Φ6~8mm, severe case/enema version Φ10~12mm (all outer diameters).
Length: Standard total length 20~30cm, effective insertion section 15~25cm, adapted to the conventional rectal operation depth.
Connector type: Default barb connector (for enema bags); customizable male/female Luer connectors (for syringes). Some versions are equipped with a valve switch to control liquid flow rate. Core Functions and Clinical Application Scenarios Exclusively designed for rectal diagnosis, treatment and nursing, the silicone rectal catheter has highly targeted functions and can replace traditional rubber catheters (hard and prone to mucosal irritation). Its core application scenarios cover clinical diagnosis/treatment and home care:
Rectal drug administration: For drug delivery to children, the elderly or patients with dysphagia (matching antipyretics, antidiarrheals, anti-inflammatory suppositories, etc.). Medicinal liquid contacts the rectal mucosa evenly through side holes with fast absorption and high bioavailability, avoiding gastrointestinal irritation from oral medications.
Intestinal enema cleaning: Suitable for clinical preoperative intestinal preparation, post-operative proctology cleaning, or home enema care for constipated patients. Connected to an enema bag, the enema liquid flows into the intestinal tract at a constant speed, gently softening feces and reducing intestinal damage.
Intestinal decompression: For rectal decompression in patients with intestinal obstruction and flatulence, expelling accumulated gas and fluid in the intestinal tract to relieve abdominal distension and pain, with simple operation and minimal trauma.
Perianal post-operative care: After proctological operations such as hemorrhoids and anal fistula, warm water and medicinal liquid are injected through the catheter for rectal irrigation, cleaning the wound surface, avoiding irritation from manual cleaning and promoting wound healing.
Home defecation care: For people with defecation disorders such as bedridden seniors and cerebral infarction sequelae, it is a special consumable for home enema and laxation, featuring softness and easy operation, reducing the nursing difficulty for family members. Custom Processing and Supporting Services The silicone rectal catheter supports clinical personalized customization; its structure and specifications can be adjusted according to the needs of hospitals and medical device manufacturers, and supporting combinations of silicone medical accessories are also provided. The core customization items are as follows:
Specification customization: Any catheter diameter (Φ2~15mm) and length (15~50cm). Custom ultra-soft versions (Shore 20~30°) for infants and young children, or thickened wall versions (Shore 50~60°) to enhance catheter body toughness are available.
Structural customization: Adding medical radiopaque lines, customizing multi-side hole layout, increasing flow control valves, replacing connector types. Some versions can be customized with a balloon end (fixes the catheter after inflation to prevent dislodgement, suitable for long-term indwelling).
Material customization: Standard medical transparent silicone rubber; customizable colored silicone (for department/usage differentiation) or modified medical silicone rubber resistant to high-concentration medicinal liquids.
Supporting customization: Can be combined with silicone sealing rings, silicone fixation patches, silicone connecting tubes, etc., to form a silicone accessory set for rectal diagnosis and treatment, adapting to the complete supporting needs of medical devices.
Packaging customization: Single-piece independent sterile packaging (ethylene oxide sterilized) and bulk boxed packaging are available, with brand LOGO, product specifications, sterilization date and other information printed, complying with medical consumable packaging standards. Operation and Usage Precautions The silicone rectal catheter is an interventional consumable; its operation must comply with medical norms, and home use must be conducted under the guidance of medical staff. The core precautions are as follows:
Thoroughly disinfect the catheter and operating instruments before use. Sterile versions can be used immediately after opening; non-sterile versions must be disinfected by high-temperature autoclaving/alcohol soaking before use.
Apply medical lubricant (e.g., petroleum jelly) to the catheter surface before insertion to reduce insertion resistance and avoid scratching the rectal mucosa. Operate gently and strictly control the insertion depth according to the scale marks.
Control the liquid flow rate during drug administration/enema to avoid abdominal distension and pain caused by excessive speed. Maintain the liquid temperature at 38~40℃ (close to human body temperature) to prevent intestinal irritation from low temperature.
Clean reusable versions in a timely manner after use, remove residual medicinal liquid/feces in the catheter, air-dry and store in a cool and dry place. Avoid direct sunlight and deformation caused by heavy pressure.
Immediately replace the catheter if aging, cracking, surface stickiness or liquid leakage occurs; do not continue to use it. Contraindicated for patients allergic to silicone rubber (extremely rare), replace with catheters of other materials. Translation Core Norms
